Essence Music Festival

The “Party with a Purpose” also known as the ESSENCE Festival is only four months away. It all started in the early 90’s, when ESSENCE magazine wanted to embark on a ground breaking concept. Little did they know, this  new and creative idea would turn into one of the most sought after cultural and musical events in the U.S.  This lifestyle magazine for African American women made the decision to create a festival of contemporary black music and culture. The only thing they knew was that they wanted the scenery to be somewhere everyone could enjoy great summer food, music, and fun. Having their eyes naturally on New Orleans, since it was the birthplace of Jazz and one of the starting points of Rock&Roll, Rhythm&Blues, Rap and other musical genres in the African American culture and tradition, they begin making preparations to host there first festival in the “Big Easy”.

logo_essence_fest_2016Since 1994 the ESSENCE Festival has been held annually at the Louisiana Superdome during the weekend of the 4th of July. In 2006 the festival was forced to relocate to Houston due to Hurricane Katrina. However, in 2007 it returned to New Orleans and had the same great impact as before. Since then, the ESSENCE Festival has had the top-sellers in the African American and crossover music scene ever. The festival gives African American artists, writers, craftsman, culinary artists, business people, and others a chance to show and sell who and what they are. New Orleans became the summer music scene, and one of the city’s top five annual drawing cards. It is now a “must” for the stars when it comes down to touring over the summer. The festival features fine arts and crafts that reflects the rich cultural heritage developed throughout the African diaspora. It includes decorative, functional, wearable and collectible art items such as clothing, jewelry, paintings, sculpture, dolls, beadwork, quilts, clay, and much more.

Star studded appearances at past festivals include but isn’t limited to:  Mary J Blige, Beyonce, Prince, Lionel Richie, Destiny’s Child and many more. This year the 2016 ESSENCE Festival will be having its 22nd big bang with a twist. What’s the twist?  This year it’s going to be a mix of old and new nighttime concert party that will be featuring more than 30 of today’s hottest hip-hop and R&B stars. This mix will consist of soul and R&B, and hip hop and pop. The lineup consists of Kendrick Lamar, Mariah, Maxwell, Lion Babe, Ciara, Jeremih and many more. Some newcomers that will also be hitting the stage are Dej Loaf and The Internet. As you can see, you don’t want to miss out on this July 4th weekend at all.
